How to prepare your cards for grading

Four steps between raw card and PSA slab.

01

Clean & inspect

Under good lighting, check every corner and edge. Use a loupe to catch micro-scratches before submission.

02

Sleeve properly

Slide the card into a perfect fit sleeve first, then into a toploader or Card Saver. Never force it.

03

Ship safely

Seal the toploader in a team bag, pad with cardboard, and use a bubble mailer. Fragile sticker recommended.

04

Wait for results

PSA turnaround is typically 2–6 months for standard service. Track your submission at psacard.com.

Common questions

Do I need toploaders for PSA submission?

Yes. PSA and CGC both require cards to be submitted inside a semi-rigid holder (toploader or Card Saver). Loose cards or soft-sleeved cards will be returned ungraded.

What's the difference between Card Savers and Toploaders?

Toploaders are fully rigid plastic. Card Savers are semi-rigid and slightly flexible, making them easier to slide cards in and out. Some graders prefer Card Savers for high-value submissions to minimise handling friction.

Can I reuse toploaders for PSA submissions?

Not recommended for valuable cards. Used toploaders can have micro-scratches inside that damage the card surface during transit. New toploaders are cheap insurance on a €100+ card.

Do gloves actually help?

Yes. Finger oils and sweat can leave invisible residue that affects grading. White cotton gloves are standard practice when handling raw SR or SEC cards worth grading.

What PSA grade should I aim for to make grading profitable?

Generally PSA 9 or PSA 10. A PSA 8 often doesn't recover grading costs on lower-value cards. Use the GumGumGrade ROI Calculator to check if it's worth it before you submit.
